Fleet Street legend: James Whitaker has passed away after a battle with cancer
"The Queen has paid tribute to legendary Daily Mirror royal correspondent James Whitaker, who passed away this morning after a gruelling battle with cancer.
His family were with him when he died in intensive care at 8am.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: "Those in the Royal Household who knew him were extremely sad to learn of his death."
James, who was 71, met the Queen for a final time at a reception in November ahead of the Diamond Jubilee.
Diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer around 12 months ago, James had a number of operations to remove tumours as well as chemotherapy. But his health had been failing since the weekend."
