"Simms Taback, an award-winning children's book author and illustrator best known for his version of "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" and "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat," his Caldecott Medal-winning adaptation of a Yiddish folk song, has died. He was 79.
Taback died of pancreatic cancer Dec. 25 at his home in Ventura, said his son, Jason.
In a more than five-decade career that included designing and illustrating the first McDonald's Happy Meal box in the 1970s, Taback was the illustrator and sometimes author of about 50 books for children.
His breakthrough book as an author-illustrator, "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," has been described as "a tour de force in innovative book illustration and design" and was a 1998 Caldecott Honor Book."
Taback died of pancreatic cancer Dec. 25 at his home in Ventura, said his son, Jason.

"Kiro Gligorov, who became Macedonia’s first president in 1991 and served two terms between then and 1999, has died at the age of 94.
His funeral, which at his prior request will be a private family occasion, is to take place on January 3 2012 in Skopje.
Gligorov was born on May 3 1917 in Stip in the then kingdom of Serbia.
Parliament in Skopje elected him president on January 27 1991. He was returned as head of state in presidential elections in 1994. At the end of his term of office, he was – then aged 82 – the world’s oldest serving head of state."

"Ablett, who had a season as Stockport manager in 2009-10, lost his 16-month fight against non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma on Sunday night.
“On behalf of Gary Ablett’s family the LMA has today confirmed that Gary passed away peacefully last night following a hard fought 16-month battle against non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” said an LMA statement.
“Respected throughout the game by players, coaches and managers alike Gary will be sadly missed.
“The LMA’s thoughts and condolences are with Gary’s wife Jacqueline and children.”
