REUTERS - Berlusconi plays last cards, denies will resign, Nov 07, 2011

ROME | Mon Nov 7, 2011 5:17pm EST
(Reuters) - Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi defied huge pressure to resign on Monday, desperately playing his last cards to save his crumbling government as fears over Italy's instability hit markets across Europe.
Berlusconi denied reports by journalists close to him that he would resign within hours, immediately reversing a brief recovery in stock and government bond markets battered by political uncertainty in the euro zone's third economy.
Yields on Italy's 10-year bonds hit 6.67 percent, their highest level since 1997, at one point on Monday, close to the 7 percent level seen as unsustainable for Italy's huge debt, one of the world's highest. European stocks were also hit by the turmoil."

TIMES OF INDIA - Man kept 29 dead bodies at home in Russia, Nov 07, 2011

"MOSCOW: Russia's Interior Ministry says police arrested a man who kept 29 mummified bodies at his apartment and dressed them up like dolls.
Ministry spokesman Valery Gribakin said on Monday that the suspect from the Volga River city of Nizhny Novgorod dug up the bodies at several cemeteries in the region. The man, whose identity was withheld, dressed them in clothes dug up from the graves.
Gribakin said that the suspect is a historian who has authored several books. He said the arrest followed a police probe into the desecration of graves in the region, which was initially blamed on extremist groups. Nizhny Novgorod is located about 250 miles (400 kilometers) east of Moscow.
Russian media reports quoted police as saying that the man only had selected the remains of young women for his grisly collection."

2.31pm: As we reported earlier, France announced a tougher fiscal consolidation programme this morning.
In the short term, the plan is designed to save an extra €7bn so that the country hits its deficit targets despite much weaker growth in 2012 (the French economy is likely to stumble along with 1% growth, not the 1.75% forecast this summer).
Economists have warned that France's AAA rating could be at risk. Francois Fillon, the French prime minister, admitted himself that the country must take serious steps to remain ahead of Europe's debt crisis:"

ATHENS | Mon Nov 7, 2011 8:48am EST
(Reuters) - Lucas Papademos, a former deputy head of the European Central Bank, was on Monday tipped to emerge as Greek prime minister as political leaders bargained over who will lead a new coalition to push through a bailout before the country runs out of money in mid-December.
But whoever leads the transitional government of national unity will have a monumental task in restoring order to a country whose chaotic economy and politics are shaking international confidence in the entire euro project.
With the European Union demanding a quick resolution to the political crisis, Prime Minister George Papandreou sealed a deal on Sunday with the conservative opposition on the crisis coalition to approve the international financial aid package."

CNN News - Japan's emperor hospitalized with persistent fever, bronchitis, Nov 07, 2011

Japanese Emperor Akihito delivers a speech during the Japan Sports 100th anniversary ceremony in Tokyo on July 16, 2011.

"Tokyo (CNN) -- Japan's 77-year-old emperor was hospitalized on Sunday, several days after coming down with a fever, a spokesperson with the Imperial Household Agency said.
Emperor Akihito, a ceremonial but revered figure in the Japan, was suffering from a worsening case of bronchitis and the fever he contracted Thursday, according to the spokesperson, who declined to be identified due to the agency's media protocol.
"He appears to be fatigued and has lost some resistance to fight against sickness," the spokesperson said. "To be on the safe side, he was hospitalized (Sunday night) at University of Tokyo Hospital."
It is the emperor's second time in a hospital this year, after getting medical treatment in February for extensive tests of his coronary arteries."

MANAGUA | Mon Nov 7, 2011 1:06am EST
(Reuters) - Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, a former Marxist guerrilla leader, took a big early lead in Sunday's presidential election after heavy social spending won him strong support among the country's poor.
Nicaragua's electoral commission said preliminary results showed Ortega had secured 63.7 percent support based on a count of votes from 18 percent of polling stations.
His closest rival, radio personality and businessman Fabio Gadea, was way off the pace, back on 29 percent."

ATHENS | Sun Nov 6, 2011 11:39pm EST
(Reuters) - Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou sealed a deal with the opposition on a crisis coalition to approve an international bailout, but details remain thin despite an EU ultimatum for Athens to get serious about tackling its huge problems.
With Greece due to run out of money in a few weeks, the European Union told its bickering parties to explain by Monday evening how they would form a unity government to enact the 130 billion euro ($179 billion) emergency funding package.
Papandreou, who sealed his fate last week with a disastrous attempt to call a referendum on the bailout, will stand down when the new government takes over, the office of the Greek president said."

THE TORONTO STAR -100 die in northern Nigeria attacks, Nov 07, 2011

"LAGOS, NIGERIA—More than 100 died in a series of attacks in northeast Nigeria launched by a radical Muslim sect, a Nigerian Red Cross official said Sunday, as sect gunmen shot and killed another police officer.
Ibrahim Bulama told the Associated Press he expected the number of dead to rise as local clinics and hospitals tabulate the casualty figures from the attacks Friday in Damaturu, the capital of rural Yobe state.
While the hard-hit city remained calm and its Muslim inhabitants celebrated a religious holiday Sunday, army and police units manned roadblocks leading into the town and streets remained largely quiet, Bulama said.
Meanwhile, the sect known locally as Boko Haram killed a police inspector Sunday in the city of Maiduguri, the sect’s spiritual home about 130 kilometres east of Damaturu. Sect gunmen stopped the officer’s car at gunpoint as he neared a mosque to pray with his family, local police commissioner Simeon Midenda said."
