LA TIMES - 'Carlos the Jackal' goes on trial in France, Nov 08, 2011

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, a k a Carlos the Jackal

"By Kim Willsher, Los Angeles Times
November 7, 2011, 6:32 p.m.
Reporting from Paris— The man known as Carlos the Jackal, once one of the world's most feared and hunted terrorism suspects, went on trial in a Paris court Monday for a series of bombings nearly 30 years ago.
Venezuelan-born Ilich Ramirez Sanchez was smiling and defiant as he was accused of being the mastermind behind four attacks in France in 1982 and 1983 that killed 11 people and injured nearly 200.
Asked to state his occupation, Ramirez, 62, replied that he was a "professional revolutionary," adding, "of the Leninist tradition."
He then insisted that although he had been born in Venezuela he had been given Palestinian nationality by the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, whose cause he espoused."

CBS News - Pakistan's "Arab Spring" moment goes unnoticed - World Watch, Nov 08, 2011

Impoverished Pakistanis line up to get free food at a restaurant in Rawalpindi Aug. 21, 2011.

"This post originally appeared on GlobalPost.
HAJI SAINDAD RIND, Pakistan -- It could have been an Arab Spring moment. Taking an apparent cue from the young Tunisian who, tired of the poverty in which he lived, set himself on fire and launched a protest movement around the world, Raja Khan, 23, went to Pakistan's parliament late last month and did the same.
Special Section: Anger in the Arab World
But in a country where poverty and unemployment is more a norm than an exception, the reaction has been muted.

Asteroid 2005 YU55

"For a brief period of time, a giant asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier, will be the closest celestial body to earth-closer even than the moon. The asteroid will pass Earth to within eight-tenths of the distance of the moon at 4.58 am IST on Wednesday, NASA has said. At the closest point, it will be within 323,469 km of Earth.
Though the space agency has classified the asteroid-called Asteroid 2005 YU55-- as a "potentially hazardous object", experts from NASA's Near Earth Object Program have said that it will not crash into the earth.
In the eventuality of it crashing into Earth, scientists say it could cause a 70-foot high tsunami within 60 miles of the crash site or a 7.0 magnitude earthquake."

"We will not wait. If the price of petroleum products and cooking gas is increased again we will not stay with this government," said Banerjee, after her meeting with Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in Kolkata.
She made the statement minutes after terming as "routine" her meeting with Mukherjee in the wake of her party's threat to withdraw support to the Congress-led UPA government over the petrol price hike.
"Today we had a routine meeting with Pranab Mukherjee in the presence of Governor M.K. Narayanan," Banerjee said after coming out of the meeting held at Raj Bhawan in Kolkata.
Banerjee's meeting with the Union Finance Minister was held as Trinamool Congress MPs met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi to express their concern over the price hike in petrol by Rs.1.80 on Thursday."

ATHENS | Tue Nov 8, 2011 9:06am EST
(Reuters) - Greek party leaders labored on Tuesday to agree on a new prime minister, with the rest of the nation and the EU clamoring for an immediate deal on a unity coalition to save the country's finances and end the chaos threatening the euro.
After early signs that a new national unity coalition could be formed quickly, the drive by the socialist and conservative parties to create a government that will rule only until February lost momentum.
Outgoing Socialist Prime Minister George Papandreou told his cabinet he hoped to have the name of a new prime minister by Tuesday night, a government source said, prolonging the agony for the Greek people desperate for political stability."

REUTERS - Berlusconi's top ally tells him to resign, Nov 08, 2011

Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi looks up during a news conference at Chigi Palace in Rome, August 4, 2011. REUTERS/Tony Gentile

"(Reuters) - Silvio Berlusconi's closest coalition ally, Umberto Bossi, told him to resign on Tuesday in what could be a mortal blow to the Italian prime minister before a crunch vote in parliament.
Bossi, head of the devolutionist Northern League, said the 75-year-old media magnate should be replaced by Angelino Alfano, secretary of the premier's PDL party.
"We asked the prime minister to stand down," Bossi told reporters outside parliament.
Berlusconi had remained defiant ahead of Tuesday afternoon's vote on a public finance measure, rejecting calls from all sides to step down.
But Bossi's action could tip the balance against him as red lights flash on bond markets about Italy's instability."

ABC News, Australia - Childhood anorexia on the rise, Nov 08, 2011

An anorexic girl lays on her bed in a psychiatric hospital

"Doctors at the Westmead Children's Hospital in NSW have told the ABC that child admissions for eating disorders, particularly anorexia, have tripled in the past decade.
Children as young as eight are being admitted, some of whose lives are at risk.
Dr Sloane Madden says children's ideas about what constitutes a good body shape are cemented at a young age.
"By the age of 12 most children have their ideas about what's a desirable weight and shape," he said.
"So children at that age see being thin as being equated with successful, hardworking, and when you couple that with the message that overweight and obesity is bad and a focus on losing weight, that really is a potentially dangerous combination."

NZ HERALD - 22 dead in western Colombia after massive mudslides, Nov 08, 2011

Rescue workers and residents look for survivors. Photo / AP

"Mudslides in western Colombia after days of heavy rain have killed at least 22 people and dozens are still missing, according to an updated official toll Sunday.
Six bodies were found earlier in the day, bringing the death toll to 22, Sandra Calvo of the government's risk management division told AFP, noting that 17 others were injured.
About 70 people are still missing, according to local media, though officials could not confirm the figure.
After several mudslides on Saturday, 150 rescuers were able to pull five members of the same family from the rubble in the city of Manizales.
Four other people however died in Manizales, the capital of Caldas, when another landslide swept into homes where more than 30 families live.
The mudslide triggered by heavy rains destroyed at least 14 homes in the city and damaged three others."
