Sanford "Sandy" McDonnell, the former chief executive of aerospace giant McDonnell Douglas Corp. who in the 1970s helped turn around the company started by his uncle, died Monday. He was 89.
His death was announced by Boeing Co., which acquired McDonnell Douglas in 1997. McDonnell's family told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at Thanksgiving 2010 and died at his home in Clayton, Mo."

Robert Temple Ayres with one of his paintings. As a set illustrator, his work involved turning blueprints and technical specifications given to him by set designers into drawings or paintings that would help guide set builders. 
"As a set illustrator for Hollywood studios, Robert Temple Ayres created his most famous work at Paramount in 1959. Officially called "Map to Illustrate the Ponderosa in Nevada," it was conjured up just so it could burst into flames on television screens during the opening of the long-running show "Bonanza."

 "Just as Adele’s 21 is aiming to tie the 24-week run atop Billboard’s Top 200 chart that the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack enjoyed 35 years ago, one of the artists featured on the latter has passed away. Jimmy Ellis, frontman of Philadelphia soul and disco band The Trammps, died yesterday following complications from Alzheimer’s disease. The singer died in a South Carolina nursing home at the age of 74.
Ellis was a founding member of The Trammps, who were born out of previous acts The Volcanos and The Moods. Once The Trammps’ original lineup was established in 1972, the band caught disco fever and racked up minor hits with songs like “Hold Back The Night” and “That’s Where The Happy People Go”."

« Frugal Café Blog Zone: "Sad breaking news… Toronto’s champion ski racer Nick Zoricic has died following head injuries he sustained from an accident while skiing at the World Cup in Switzerland. Utterly tragic and shocking.
Zoricic, born in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina), emigrated with his family to Canada when he was five. Only 29 years old, he had recently won third place during the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup Ski Cross in January in Les Contamines, France. This was Zoricic’s third year on the World Cup circuit.
Prayers go to Nick’s family, friends, and fans as they grieve and struggle to come to grips with this unforeseen, heartbreaking tragedy. May he rest in peace and God bless him."

 "A catastrophic coach crash that killed at least 22 children and six adults - after the vehicle veered, hit a kerb and then rammed into a concrete wall in a Swiss tunnel - could have been caused by speeding.
Police said the vehicle, in which the 12-year-old schoolchildren were travelling, was going 'considerably faster' than the 63mph speed limit as it careered into an underpass wall on the A9 highway, near Sierre, Valais, close to the border with Italy.
Swiss crash scene investigators told Belgium's Le Soir newspaper: 'The coach was travelling at very high speed. It was going considerably faster than the speed limit on a stretch of road where the speed is limited to 100kmh.'"

 "It is not too often that a cruise ship leaves port with its lights on, but on Monday evening, March 5, the cruise ship Ocean Princess left Pago Pago at nearly 7 p.m., and the early darkness had the beautiful lights on the ship aglow as it pulled away from the dock.
The Ocean Princess is the ninth of nineteen cruise ships scheduled to visit the territory in 2012, and the only one scheduled to call into port during the month of March."

The conceptual designer created the look of characters including Darth Vader, Chewbacca and R2-D2 and C-3PO.
He also worked on the original Battlestar Galactica TV series and Steven Spielberg films ET and Cocoon, for which he won an Oscar.
A tribute on his website said: "We'll miss you Ralph. You will forever be the brightest star in our galaxy."

 "New Jersey Rep. Donald Payne died today of complications from colon cancer. The Democrat and former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus was 77 years old.  He died  at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, N.J., according to his office.
Payne was the first African American elected to the House of Representatives from New Jersey, in 1988. Representing the 10th District of the Garden State, his jurisdiction included counties that border New York City. A native of Newark, the congressman made alleviating poverty a key tenet of his 12 terms in office. He was one of the most progressive members of his state’s delegation."
