"It was 75 years ago today, on 11 December 1936, that King Edward VIII broadcast to the British Empire the news that he had abdicated. “But you must believe me when I tell you,” he said in the course of his short, dignified address, “that I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.” It was the first abdication since that of King Stephen in the 12th century, and – with the possible exception of the “annus horribilis”, as the Queen named the series of disasters that struck her family in 1992 – the lowest point the House of Windsor reached in the 20th century."
