NY TIMES - A Shaken Italy Is Poised to Name a New Government, Nov 10, 2011

"ROME — Italy pulled back from the brink on Thursday, as lawmakers seemed poised to usher out Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and replace his government with a cabinet of technocrats most likely led by a former European Commissioner, Mario Monti.

CBS News - Ex-Israeli leader ordered to prison for rape, Nov 10, 2011

"(AP) JERUSALEM - Israel's Supreme Court on Thursday ordered former President Moshe Katsav to spend seven years in prison after rejecting the disgraced politician's appeal of a rape conviction and other sex crimes.
The unanimous decision of the three-judge panel capped a long and sordid chapter in Israeli politics that captured the country's attention for more than five years and ended with Katsav becoming the highest-ranking Israeli official ever sentenced to prison. He is to start serving his sentence on Dec. 7.
The ruling was seen as a major triumph for women's rights — and specifically, rape victims' rights — and for a legal system willing to take on some of the country's most influential figures."

"(Reuters) - Respected former European Commissioner Mario Monti looked set on Thursday to be appointed within days to head an emergency Italian government, as politicians rushed to combat a crisis threatening the entire euro zone.
Political sources said Monti could be appointed to replace Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi by Sunday and would then in short order form a unity government comprised of politicians and technocrats to push through a tough austerity program.
Dithering politicians seemed finally to have been galvanized into action after Italy's borrowing costs soared way above sustainable levels on Wednesday, and earlier opposition to Monti among ruling politicians was evaporating as they scrambled to end uncertainty stoking the crisis."

VOICE of AMERICA - Europe Struggles to Restore Confidence in Troubled Economies, Nov 10, 2011

Greece chose economist Lucas Papademos to head its interim government, with the goal of getting the tough conditions of the European financial rescue package approved.

"Stressing that the global economy is "under stress," India on Thursday announced trade concession for poorer SAARC countries and exhorted the grouping's members "to put aside differences" and work towards the "higher calling" of regional integration through more trade and all-round connectivity.
Speaking at the plenary of the two-day South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation summit that began in Maldives on Thursday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pushed for "complete normalisation of trade relations" in South Asia and for a SAARC investment pact."

CARE2 - Don't Abandon Teen With Rare Disease! - The Petition Site, Nov 10, 2011

Don't Abandon Teen With Rare Disease!

"Brooklyn Mills used to be a normal 16-year-old girl. As a cheerleader at her high school she was very active, engaging in vigorous workouts every day. But symptoms of extreme back pain led her to find that she had Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a very rare and painful genetic disorder.
The pain Brooklyn experiences stems from her body literally falling apart. The collagen in her joints is weak, causing symptoms like loss of eyesight and the ability to walk. Unfortunately, there are no doctors in Ontario, Brooklyn's hometown that have the knowledge to treat this horrible disease."

BBC News - India and Pakistan PMs pledge 'new chapter', Nov 10, 2011

Yusuf Raza Gilani (L) and Manmohan Singh in the Maldives, 10 Nov

"Pakistan's prime minister and his Indian counterpart have met in the Maldives, pledging to open a "new chapter" between the two nations.
Yusuf Raza Gilani said after meeting Manmohan Singh the next full round of talks would be "more constructive".
Mr Singh said he welcomed the "positive movement" from the meeting.
Talks between the two nations were suspended after the 2008 Mumbai (Bombay) attacks which India blamed on Pakistan-based militants."

(Xinhua/Official Website of the Iranian Supreme Leader)
TEHRAN, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said Thursday that Iran will respond " powerfully" to any attack on the country by the United States and Israel, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
"The enemies, especially the United States and the Zionist regime (of Israel) should know that Iran does not aggress any country, but will respond to any aggression (on the Islamic Republic) and even to any threats (to the country) powerfully," Khamenei made the remarks addressing Iranian army students.
"Anybody who may think of aggressions on the Islamic Republic should make itself ready to receive strong slaps and iron fists from Iranian Army, Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, (the voluntary forces of) Basij and in one word from Iranian great nation," he was quoted as saying.
Khamenei called on Iran's Armed Forces to be prepared to defend the country.
Khamenei's remarks came as the reports said recently that the western countries and Israel may launch an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as the IAEA latest report accused Iran of engaging in activities related to the development of nuclear weapons.

"(AP) ANKARA, Turkey - Rescue workers have pulled out 24 survivors from the rubble of three buildings, collapsed by an earthquake in eastern Turkey, authorities said Thursday. At least seven were killed and dozens of others trapped.
Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said Wednesday's quake toppled 25 buildings in the city of Van but only three of them were occupied since the others have been evacuated after suffering damages in last month's powerful temblor. The magnitude-5.7 quake was a grim replay of the previous magnitude-7.2 earthquake that hit Oct. 23, killing more than 600 people."
