"Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have opened their annual summit, making an agreement to allow Burma to take over the rotating presidency of the organisation in 2014.It is the first time Burma has attended the summit, which began in the Balinese town of Nusa Dua amid a heavy security presence today.
Burma was supposed to hold the presidency of ASEAN five years ago, but gave it up following pressure over its human rights record.ASEAN secretary-general Surin Pitsuwan says Burma has made progress in recent months under the new military backed, civilian-led government."
