"President Hamad Karzai has opened a gathering of elders from across Afghanistan in the capital Kabul.
He arrived at the traditional meeting amid tight security as more than 2,000 tribal, political, religious and community leaders spend the next four days discussing the peace process and Afghanistan's future ties with the United States.
Mr Karzai told delegates that Afghanistan needed its dignity but wanted to make a deal with the US.
"We want our national sovereignty and we want it today," he told the gathering.
"We want our relationship with America to be one of two independent countries.""
