The Greek prime minister and opposition have agreed on the formation of a new coalition government in a bid to break the political deadlock and pave the way for an EU bailout for the debt-stricken country.
Prime minister George Papandreou and opposition leader Antonis Samaras battled over the weekend to strike the deal – which will see a new leader appointed to take over from Papandreou – ahead of the opening of the global financial markets this morning.
A statement from the Greek presidency said the leaders will meet again on Monday to discuss who would head the coalition government, but made no mention of how long the interim government would last."

LA TIMES - Multiple missteps led to drone killing U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Nov 06, 2011

Predator drone

"By David S. Cloud and David Zucchino, Los Angeles Times
November 5, 2011, 3:50 p.m.
Reporting from Washington— On the evening of April 5, a pilot settled into a leather captain's chair at Creech Air Force Base in southern Nevada and took the controls of a Predator drone flying over one of the most violent areas of southwestern Afghanistan. Minutes later, his radio crackled.
A firefight had broken out. Taliban insurgents had ambushed about two dozen Marines patrolling a bitterly contested road.
The Air Force captain angled his joystick and the drone veered toward the fighting taking place half a world away, where it was already morning. He powered up two Hellfire missiles under its wings and ordered a crew member responsible for operating the drone's cameras to search for enemy fighters."

ABC News, Australia - Greece strikes deal on new government, Nov 06, 2011

A worried George Papandreou after crisis talks.

"Greek leaders who have been holding crisis talks in Athens have agreed to form a new coalition government, but prime minister George Papandreou will not stay in the top job.
This morning's agreement came after two days of meetings to try and form a government of national unity and followed a meeting between Mr Papandreou and Antonis Samaras, the leader of the country's largest opposition party.
A statement from the office of president Karolos Papoulias said the two sides would meet again on Monday to discuss who would head the coalition government, but that Mr Papandreou would not lead the new administration."

In Italy, euro crisis is creating nervous banking clients
"Editor's Note: The following article comes from Worldcrunch, an innovative, new global news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. This article was originally published in La Stampa.
By Marco Alfieri, Worldcrunch
MILAN – “Are you sure my investments are safe?” Everyone is asking the same question to Matteo R., a 42-year-old director of a bank branch in the village of Settala, 15 kilometers east of Milan.
Settala, for all intents and purposes, is a fairly wealthy village. There are 7,500 inhabitants and five banks, which would indicate there’s plenty of money around. Most of Settala’s residents live in single-family homes, as opposed to apartment buildings. Many have large cars. Still, residents here are jittery, rattled by crashing markets and news of the euro zone’s sovereign debt crisis."

"Reuters) - Syrian forces shot dead at least 13 civilians on Sunday in a continued military assault on the restive city of Homs and in attacks on pro-democracy demonstrations that erupted after prayers marking the main Muslim feast, activists said.
Qatar's prime minister called for Arab states to meet next Saturday to weigh Syria's failure to implement a deal struck with the Arab League to end bloodshed that was touched off by the popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.
The Egyptian official news agency MENA said the gathering would address "the continuing violence and the government's failure to stick to its obligations under the Arab Action Plan to solve the crisis in Syria.""

REUTERS - Greece seals deal on new coalition under EU pressure, Nov 06, 2011

"(Reuters) - Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou and conservative opposition leader Antonis Samaras agreed on Sunday on a new coalition government to approve a euro zone bailout deal before calling elections, the office of the president said.
Papandreou will not lead the new administration, the office said in a statement issued after the European Union gave Greece 24 hours to explain how it will form a unity government to enact its 130 billion euro emergency funding deal.
The two men sealed the deal after talks led by President Karolos Papoulias, but it remained sketchy as they have yet to agree even on who will be the new prime minister to lead Greece through its economic, political and social crisis.
"Tomorrow there will be new communication between the prime minister and the opposition leader on who will be the leader of the new government," the statement said."

CNN News - Why is unity so important to Europe?, Nov 06, 2011

The leaders of Germany and France, Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy, are struggling to keep the European Union -- and the euro -- together in the face of the eurozone crisis.
"London (CNN) -- Europe's leaders are battling to keep the eurozone and the wider European Union together in the face of a financial crisis that threatens to split partnerships forged over more than half a century.
So why are they putting so much effort into preserving unity? And can they prevent today's debts and differences from dividing the continent for decades to come? "

Lawmaker: Cambodian workers at risk

"Lawmaker: Cambodian workers at risk
(CNN) – A Cambodian opposition parliament member says labor recruitment agencies in her country are still sending domestic workers to Malaysia - despite a recent ban on the practice - because many government officials either own or have close ties to the companies.
The country's ministries of labor and interior "are not taking any action," Mu Sochua told CNN, noting that "many officials and familial members of some ministers actually own these dubious agencies."
The ban was enacted in October shortly after a report by CNN's Dan Rivers examined a recruitment agency in the Cambodian capital that revealed stories of women trapped in debt-bondage in Malaysia.
The story "that aired on CNN has actually awakened the country up the whole country on this human trafficking issue again," said Sochua. "I have to say that his piece is just one little part of the whole problem, which is much worse."

Traveling with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, covering seven countries in seven days (Malta, Libya, Oman, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) was sure to present some challenges, but also offer some fresh perspectives. My usual beat, covering Obama at the White House and on his trips abroad, generally involves lots of pushing and shoving with other photographers behind velvet ropes or trying to get a clear photo through layers upon layers of secret service agents. I was welcoming a chance to be free of these constraints in the more low key State Department bubble."

REUTERS - Jobs report hints at some improvement, Nov 06, 2011

"(Reuters) - Hiring slowed in October but the unemployment rate hit a six-month low and job gains in the prior two months were stronger than previously thought, pointing to some improvement in the still-weak labor market.
The employment report on Friday was the latest data to suggest the economy was gathering a bit of momentum and a further indication recession risks were fading.
Nonfarm payrolls rose a tepid 80,000 last month, the Labor Department data showed, below economists' expectations for a gain of 95,000 and a slowdown from September.
But employers added 102,000 more jobs than previously estimated in August and September, and the jobless rate edged down to 9 percent after being stuck at 9.1 percent for three consecutive months, taking the sting out of the report."
