"Dr. Mary Ellen Avery, a medical researcher who helped save hundreds of thousands of premature infants with a single, crucial discovery about their ability to breathe, died on Dec. 4 in West Orange, N.J. She was 84.
Dr. Mary Ellen Avery with President George Bush in 1991, when she was awarded the National Medal of Science.
Children’s Hospital Boston made the announcement days after her death, but it was not widely disseminated.
Dr. Avery was the first woman to be appointed physician in chief at Children’s Hospital; the first woman to head a clinical department at Harvard Medical School; the first woman to be chosen president of the Society for Pediatric Research; and the first pediatrician to lead the American Association for the Advancement of Science."

"Tropical Cyclone Heidi has crossed the coast of Western Australia, lashing Port Hedland with heavy rain and wild winds reaching up to 130km/h.
The category two cyclone made landfall about 4.30am WST (0730 AEDT) on Thursday, after a tense and sleepless night for locals.
Communities between Pardoo and Whim Creek, including Port and South Hedland, remain on red alert, although Heidi is expected to weaken as she moves inland."

"The Fiji Barbarians team for the Uprising Fiji International 7s will be known tomorrow following the fitness test for the Fiji 7s squad.
Four players are being carefully monitored, Jimilai Naikadawa, Setefano Cakau, Sekonaia Kalou and Osea kolinisau.
"They've been slowly getting back into training," team manager, Semi Rogoyawa said.
"We have a medical test tomorrow to review their condition."
Following the fitness test and the medical examination, coaches Alifereti Dere and Etuwate Waqa will name their 12-member team to field as the Fiji Barbarians side.
"There is also going to be another team, eight players that will also field a Fiji side for the Uprising 7s.""
