MIRROR - Record label music sales hit 18-year low, Feb 17, 2012

"Music sales have slumped to an 18-year low – despite booming demand for downloads.
Industry body the BPI said record label revenue dropped by 3.4% to £795million last year – the lowest since 1993 and sharply down on the £1.2billion made in 2003.
Physical music, such as CDs, accounted for £514m of income, a decline of 14%. CD single sales plunged 33% to just £3.3m.
Digital music – downloads, subscription sites like Spotify and via mobile – jumped a quarter to £282m.
Grammy winner Adele had the best-selling digital album in 2011, followed by Bruno Mars and Rihanna."

"The boss of bookie giant Ladbrokes has slammed Mary Portas for claiming betting shops blight high streets.
Richard Glynn said the self-styled Queen of Shops had got her facts wrong, with bookies proving a major boost to communities.
He told the Daily Mirror: “Talk to the local police, the local council, they will tell you betting shops add to the viability of the retail environment."

"Virgin Atlantic has warned BA’s takeover of BMI could see fares soar by a third.
The deal would also leave travellers going from Heathrow to Scotland and North West England with just one choice of airline, it added.
Virgin is trying to scupper BA’s owner International Airlines Group’s £300million purchase of BMI from German carrier Lufthansa.
In a formal complaint to the Competition Commission, Sir Richard said: “This takeover would take British flying back to the dark ages."

"For more than 30 years Bill Griffiths wanted to have a restaurant he could call his own.
Turns out he has a bit of a knack for it.
Griffiths, owner of the British-themed Farmers Gastropub in downtown Springfield, said he was thrilled to learn his place was named the best U.K restaurant in the world (outside the U.K.) for 2012 by the British newspaper The Telegraph.

Forensic workers carry away the body of an inmate who died in a prison fire in Comayagua, Honduras, 90 miles north of the capital on Wednesday. As many as 365 people died and 21 were injured, according to authorities.
"TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- A fire started by an inmate tore through an aging and severely overcrowded Honduran prison, burning and suffocating inmates in their locked cells and killing as many as 356 people in one of the world's deadliest prison fires in a century, authorities said Wednesday."

"The Queen has paid tribute to legendary Daily Mirror royal correspondent James Whitaker, who passed away this morning after a gruelling battle with cancer.
His family were with him when he died in intensive care at 8am.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: "Those in the Royal Household who knew him were extremely sad to learn of his death."
James, who was 71, met the Queen for a final time at a reception in November ahead of the Diamond Jubilee.
Diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer around 12 months ago, James had a number of operations to remove tumours as well as chemotherapy. But his health had been failing since the weekend."

"IRISH character actor David Kelly, who played Grandpa Joe in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and motorcycled naked in Waking Ned Devine, has died. He was 82.
His family and friends said Kelly died on Sunday in Dublin after an acting career on stage, film, TV and radio that spanned a half-century. His cause of death was not announced."
