 "KATMANDU, Nepal — Three climbers died and two others were missing while descending from the summit of Mount Everest — a toll that raised concerns about overcrowding in the “death zone” at the top of the world’s tallest peak.
The deadly weekend unfolded as an estimated 150 climbers tried to reach the top Friday and Saturday as they rushed to use a brief window of good weather in an otherwise troubled climbing season. Many had been waiting at a staging camp for several days for their chance to head to the summit."

 "In a 1949 press release sent out after the publication of his first novel, “I’ll Be Right Home, Ma,” about a light-heavyweight fighter with “a sweet right-hand sock,” Henry Denker declared his belief that “a writer should be active in several forms of his trade.” He added: “Writing is a business and should be practiced as such. On days when you think you can’t possibly write a line you do it anyhow.”

LA TIMES - H.H. Brookins dies at 86; pastor was influential black leader, May 24, 2012

 "The Rev. Hamel Hartford Brookins, an influential bishop and former pastor of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles who became a political power broker, civil rights leader and mentor to former Mayor Tom Bradley, the Rev. Jesse Jackson and many others, has died. He was 86.
The son of Mississippi sharecroppers, Brookins rose to prominence in the 1960s and '70s as an articulate, self-assured champion of black political empowerment. He died Tuesday at a Los Angeles retirement center where he had been receiving hospice care, a church spokesman said. Brookins had been ill for some time."

MARINE CORPS TIMES - Naval Academy’s 1st black graduate dies at 85, May 24, 2012

 "ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Retired Lt. Cmdr. Wesley Brown, the first African-American to graduate from the Naval Academy, has died, the academy said. He was 85.
The Capital of Annapolis reported that Brown died Tuesday. An academy spokesman did not know where Brown died and a cause of death was not immediately known Wednesday.
Brown, a 1949 graduate, was appointed to the academy in 1945. He was the sixth black admitted but the first to earn a degree."

GLOBAL GRIND - Hal Jackson, Radio Pioneer, Dead At 96, May 24, 2012

 "Hal Jackson, the legendary voice of New York's WBLS, has died at the age of 96 due to illness.
WBLS released a statement expressing their sadness at the loss of the radio pioneer.
Jackson was a popular radio and television personality and one of the most respected men in the communications industry.
As a radio pioneer, Jackson experienced many "firsts" that have assisted in opening doors for other aspiring Black broadcasters, musicians and performers."
