LA Times - Kadafi son Seif Islam reported captured in Libya, Nov 19, 2011

"REPORTING FROM BEIRUT -- Forces loyal to Libya's provisional government have captured Seif Islam Kadafi, fugitive son and onetime heir apparent of Libya's late ruler, Moammar Kadafi, according to news agency accounts from Libya.
A militia commander told a press conference that Seif Islam was caught with a pair of aides near the southern Libyan city of Sabha, some 400 miles south of Tripoli, the Associated Press reported.
The prize captive has been taken to the Libyan city of Zintan, home of one of Libya's largest revolutionary brigades, said the commander, Bashir Tlayeb, the AP reported.
The AP reported that celebratory gunfire resounded in the Libyan capital as word spread of the arrest of the only member of the Kadafi family still at large. Libya TV aired a photo that purports to show Seif al-Islam in custody, sitting by a bed and holding up three bandaged fingers as a guard looks on, the AP said."

AP News - Samoa News|Seif al-Islam Gadhafi captured in southern Libya, Nov 19, 2011

"ZINTAN, Libya (AP) -- Moammar Gadhafi's former heir apparent Seif al-Islam was captured by revolutionary fighters in the southern desert Saturday just over a month after his father was killed...
setting off joyous celebrations across Libya and closing the door on the possibility that the fugitive son could stoke further insurrection.
Seif al-Islam - who has undergone a transformation from a voice of reform in an eccentric and reviled regime to one of Interpol's most-wanted - now faces the prospect of trial before an international or Libyan court to answer for the alleged crimes of his late father's four-decade rule over the oil-rich North African nation."

HAWAII Reporter - US, China Discuss South China Sea on Final Day of Bali Summit, Nov 19, 2011

"BY DAN ROBINSON - U.S. President Barack Obama met in Bali Saturday with China's Premier Wen Jiabao as leaders attending the East Asia Summit brought their meetings to a close.
U.S. officials say the two discussed regional tensions over the South China Sea.
The Obama-Wen meeting, announced by the White House on short notice Saturday morning, occurred before leaders at the summit held a formal plenary session and a working lunch.
Neither commented before or after. But U.S. National Security Advisor Tom Donilon said they spoke briefly about the South China Sea issue following up on a conversation from the previous day, and that there would be more discussion among leaders later."

"U.S. President Barack Obama is on his way home Saturday, after a nine-day Asia-Pacific tour that took him to Hawaii, Australia and Indonesia for a summit of East Asian leaders.
Just hours before Air Force One departed from Bali, Indonesia, Mr. Obama and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit to discuss economic issues between the two countries.
White House officials said Mr. Obama stressed the importance of China adjusting the value of its currency, which Washington says is deeply undervalued."

CNN News - Jobs, cuts to dominate Spanish vote, Nov 19, 2011

"Madrid, Spain (CNN) -- The campaign for Spain's parliamentary elections was concluding late Friday under the shadow of financial markets that have hammered debt-ridden Spain in the run up to Sunday's vote.
The opposition conservative leader, Mariano Rajoy, of the Popular Party, remained far ahead in opinion polls throughout the campaign and is widely expected to be elected as the next prime minister.
In a sale of 10-year government bonds on Thursday, Spain was forced to offer investors nearly 7 percent in interest, a level that eventually led to bailouts for Greece, Portugal and Ireland, and is perceived as a tipping point for a potential financial bailout."

VOA News - IAEA Rebukes Iran for Nuclear Activities, Nov 19, 2011

Iranian ambassador to the IAEA, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, at board of governors meeting, Vienna, Nov. 18, 2011.
"The United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency has passed a resolution that cites "deep and increasing concern" about Iran's nuclear activities.
The 35-member board of the International Atomic Energy Agency approved the resolution Friday, about a week after the agency said there is "credible" evidence that Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons. Only Cuba and Ecuador voted against the resolution, while Indonesia abstained.
The United States, Britain, China, France, Germany, and Russia crafted the measure, which bows to concerns raised by China and Russia. Both nations sought a milder response to Tehran."

SF GATE News - Police: Vallejo officer's killer acted alone, Nov 19, 2011

"One of the last 911 calls Vallejo police Officer James Capoot responded to was from an 11-year-old boy who was upset that his father was disciplining him over not doing schoolwork.
Capoot put him on a "straight and narrow path," said Roy Wright, the father of the boy, Justin Wright, who was told by Capoot that his job was to "listen to your parents and do what they say." The officer, who spoke to the boy Wednesday, the night before he was slain allegedly by a bank robbery suspect, also warned the boy not to call 911 over a similar issue again."

WN News - Does the Church Have Any Weapons Left? Nov 19, 2011

In this photo released by the Vatican newspaper Osservatore Romano, Pope Benedict XVI greets members of the Israeli Religious Council during a private meeting at the Vatican Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011.
"When the Vatican proclaimed that it supported worldwide protests against economic inequalities, it was mindful of another scene that had unfolded around the first millennium in Europe. But first, the Catholic Church's Justice and Peace Department announced that businesses and state economies should always lead to the welfare and good of the people. While decreeing that people should demand a more equitable economic and social order, one that protests unemployment, homelessness and food shortages, the Catholic Church also issued a statement saying the economic and financial crisis which the world is going through calls everyone, individuals and peoples, to examine in depth the principles and the cultural and moral values at the bases of social coexistence. But how powerful and effective are such Church decrees, and do people really care about sacred judgments?"

WN News - Iran must lift nuclear bomb suspicions, Nov 19, 2011

A sign reading "Atomic Power plant" points the way to the nuclear power plant in Bushehr, Iran, Wednesday Feb. 25, 2009.
UNITED NATIONS — UN leader Ban Ki-moon on Friday joined international demands for Iran to lift suspicions that it may be seeking a nuclear bomb after it was condemned by the UN’s atomic watchdog. “The secretary general remains deeply concerned about unresolved issues regarding the Iranian nuclear program, including those which need to be clarified to exclude possible military dimensions,” said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky.Ban had noted the International Atomic Energy Agency’s resolution passed Friday condemning Iran’s nuclear activities, the spokesman said in a written statement to a question from AFP.“The resolution adopted by the IAEA board of governors today provides an opportunity for intensifying dialogue aimed at resolving all outstanding issues of concern,” said the spokesman.Ban called on Iran to cooperate “without delay” with the IAEA’s proposal to send a high-level team to the Islamic republic.“The secretary general emphasizes again that the onus is on Iran to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program,” said Nesirky.

CBS News - U.N. "deplores" plot to kill Saudi envoy in U.S, Nov 19, 2011

Saudi Ambassador to the United States Adel al-Jubeir speaks to reporters at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., Nov. 27, 2007.
"(AP) UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution Friday deploring the alleged plot to kill Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States and pointed a finger at Iran.
The 193-member world body didn't directly accuse Iran of involvement, but it called on the Islamic Republic to comply with international law requiring protection of diplomats and to cooperate in bringing those responsible for the assassination plot to justice.
The United States alleged in October that agents linked to Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard were involved in a plot to kill Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir at his favorite restaurant in Washington. It has charged a U.S. citizen who holds an Iranian passport and an Iranian described as a member of an elite Revolutionary Guard unit, who is still at large."

REUTERS - Democrats reject latest deficit-cutting plan, Nov 19, 2011

"(Reuters) - A high-profile congressional effort to trim stubborn budget deficits appeared near collapse on Friday as Democrats rejected a scaled-back proposal from Republicans that contained few tax increases.
With Democrats and Republicans on a deficit-cutting "super committee" deadlocked ahead of a Wednesday deadline, House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner floated an offer to try to break the logjam on tax increases and benefit cuts.
The plan would save $643 billion over 10 years, about half of the panel's goal of $1.2 trillion, but the two sides were unable to even agree what was in the plan.
Boehner aides said it included $229 billion in new revenues and fees. Democrats said it would only generate $3 billion in new revenue from closing a tax break for corporate jets.
"To have something on the table that does not ask the wealthiest people in the country to share (the burden) ... is unconscionable," said Senator John Kerry, a Democrat on the committee."

"(Reuters) - Drug regulators withdrew their approval of Roche's Avastin for breast cancer, saying the drug was not effective enough to justify its risks even if patients believe it has helped them live longer.
Reversing course on a drug that was approved for the disease in 2008, U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said subsequent research did not confirm hopes that Avastin would help patients with advanced breast cancer live longer or improve quality of life.
The drug will remain on the market for other uses, such as treating types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer."

REUTERS - Escape Europe's woes with U.S. muni bonds, Nov 19, 2011

"(Reuters) - Attention nervous municipal bond investors: You'll be pleased to know that most U.S. issuers are not like Harrisburg, Pennsylvania or Jefferson County, Alabama. Nor are they in the same tailspin as Greece, Italy or Spain.
And there's little chance that the latest Italian crisis will have any impact on the highest-rated U.S. muni bonds. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful. You still need to do some due diligence before plunging into these tax-free bonds and related funds."

REUTERS - U.S., China face off over sea dispute, Nov 19, 2011

"(Reuters) - The United States and China faced off on Saturday over the thorny issue of how to resolve competing claims by Asian countries to sovereignty of the South China Sea, the latest point of friction between the two powers.
President Barack Obama told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who indirectly warned Washington on Friday to stay out of the dispute, that the United States wanted to ensure the sea lanes were kept open and peaceful."

REUTERS - A rally could happen in week ahead but some big ifs, Nov 19, 2011

"(Reuters) - Wall Street is in for a volatile week as escalating problems in Europe's debt crisis continue to keep investors on their toes.
With light trading volume expected next week due to the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, intraday swings are likely to be wide and frequent as traders instantly react to headlines out of Europe.
In addition, a 12-member "super committee" in Congress has until midnight on Wednesday to strike a deal involving tax increases and spending cuts to rein in federal spending. Investors are concerned that failure to reach a deal would result in automatic reductions that would harm the fragile recovery."

REUTERS - U.N. Nuclear Watchdog board rebukes defiant Iran, Nov 19, 2011

"(Reuters) - The U.N. nuclear watchdog board censured Iran on Friday over mounting suspicions it is trying to develop nuclear weapons, but Tehran said the move would only strengthen its determination to press on with sensitive work.
Almost unanimously, the agency's 35-nation board passed a resolution expressing "increasing concern" about Iran's nuclear program, after a U.N. report last week said the Islamic state appeared to have worked on designing an atom bomb."

The Arab League formally suspended Syria on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the British Foreign Secretary announced that he would meet Syrian opposition members.
William Hague will meet members of the Syrian National Council (SNC) and the National Co-ordination Committee for Democratic Change in London on Monday, his office said."

REUTERS- The euro zone’s self-inflicted killer, Nov 19, 2011

"In the spring of 2010, European finance ministers announced the facility’s formation with great fanfare. In its inaugural report, Standard and  Poor’s described the EFSF as the “cornerstone of the EU’s strategy to restore financial stability to the euro zone sovereign debt market.” The facility itself said in an October 2011 date presentation that its mission is to “safeguard financial stability in Europe.”
That of course hasn’t happened. And the evidence suggests that the EFSF may have only exacerbated the problems.
In theory, the facility is supposed to provide a way for a country that the market perceives as weak to still borrow money on good terms. The initial idea was that instead of the financially troubled country itself trying to sell its debt to live another day, the EFSF would be the one to raise the money and lend it to the country in question. The logic was simple: country X might be shaky, but the EFSF deserved a triple-A rating."
